Learning 2.008 Shanghai Conference

By Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach

Using Web 2.0 tools educators can network with others around the globe extending traditional boundaries
of ongoing, learner centered professional development and support. See concrete examples of how the tools
that support Virtual Learning Communities (VLCs) are being used and how to create supportive, reflective
communities of practice around school-based goals.

Sheryl, you rock, but don't encourage people not to cite you! Original ideas and good thought deserve credit!
we are preparing students for their post-secondary endeavours - not for the current environment
difficulty lies in the speed of change and the unknowing of what will be valued in the future
in general, the future worth is based on social and intellectual capital
we want the community members to move from "lurking" to "learning" and eventually "leading"
job of the leader is to coax more people to actively participate
key position - community organizer/moderator/instigator for encouragement for forming connections among members
Great session! I really enjoyed it!

I'd be interested in developing avatars to preserve the memory of the eldres of an Inuit community I lived in for 5 years. I'll look up your presentation of session1, talk to my friend in the community who is working at the cultural institute, and get back to you on this. I am sure students and teachers from the local school would be interessted in participating!
