Learning 2.008 Shanghai Conference

Ways to engage learning:

Use gaming
Competition
Students interact online with teachers outside of school

We talked about the idea that students would abuse an open, student centered tech rich environment. This is what they said:

When it all becomes normal than students would stop abusing the openness

Why do you Blog?

Blogs are a way to communicate with others.

Random quotes:

Most boring lessons are when the teacher tells you to read and take notes

Go to google and learn on your own.
Computers are not that hard.

Primary school makes students listen to the teacher. Start with foundations if you want to change student behavior.

Why do we have to learn that (insert any subject) when we can just learn on the computer?

Don’t believe in exam. They don’t give a clear reflection of student performance.
Give over all grade of how they progressed.

Formal setting makes learning difficult. More casual relationships make for better learning.

Twitter too complicated. Waste of time.

What would you like your classes to be like?

Help with how to apply knowledge?
Need to see a point.
When will I need this in life?

How do you evaluate information for accuracy?

Teacher could be helpful in this aspect.
Need to know how to search. Cross-reference.

Which activities would you like?

Film making.

I recorded the session with garage, but can't guarantee the quality. I hope to have it edited and posted as a podcast in the next few days. Will link. In the meantime, here is a podcast I did a few weeks ago with another web 2.0 kid on the same topic.
