Communication evolved from Lascaux drawings to text and back to images again (but much better resolution! and with Creative Commons!). Come explore concepts of Web 2.0 Storytelling (http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/50+Ways) and engage in some creative activities to get you thinking visually by telling a story in images only.
We will see what we can create as stories from a collection of photos that conference participants submitted ahead of time and examine the processes that go into the decision making... and perhaps play a round of 5 Card Nancy.
Even if you are not attending (or not even interested in) my session, you can pitch in my contributing some photos to the Telling Stories with Pictures Pool. I have set up a site that will draw from this pool to provide a series of random image that participants will then experiment with generating a visual story- and telling a good story with just five photos is much harder than you may guess, but also taps into some goof cerebral territory.
More than just playing, we'll share ideas on how we communicate with pictures and tap into some of the great concepts of Scott McCloud's book Undestanding Comics.
50 web 2.0 ways to tell a story - search to find out more. Voicethread - photostory with ability to add comments. Slideshare (Youtube for powerpoint). Cogdogroo on wikiplaces.
Slideshare has capability to add mp3.
Cinderella example on cogdogroo. (BAD example!)
Loads of resources listed on this site. Use flickr as google may have images that you aren't allowed to use. Battery dying...dying...dyin
I can see many ways to use these tools in my classroom...The comic strip, 5 card nancy, could be used with biochemical pathways or schematics for involved labs...flicker is favorite tool
slideshare (Youtube for powerpoints) Embed into webpages
voicethread (audio as an accompanyment)
flicker can be used to find ideas for stories. (Plus, you get your first picture.)
Do not rely on google images
It's a good idea to tell the same story to show students the end result of the program.
embed means that the code is put into my page, not a link to another site.
Comiqs looks neat. Many of these require flash players so they are difficult to print. Will probably require screen captures such as "grab"
"Five card Nancy" creating a story based on five randomly dealt comic sections. The process repeats itself on the website. (www.7415comics.com/nancy/index.shtm...?) Perhaps words can be deleted and students have to create their own.
Apply the same process to random pictures. (students can even upload pictures for this onto a class wiki if flickr is not available. If using this for school, be careful about where students are looking for material (sketchy stuff)
Session notes:
Don't use Google images to search for images! use Flickr instead.
Alan told the same story 50 times, using different web2 tools (all listed on cogdogroo web link listed above and all FREE.)
We watched Alan's orginal 60 second story (created in imovie) then we watched how he had used the tool Comiqs to create the same story as a comic strip.
5 Card Nancy - Pick 1 picture from a sequence of 5, then pick a second pic from a different sequence. Continue 5 times to create a story that makes sense. ( www.7415comics.com/nancy ) The point of this is to show how you can put pictures together that may not go together and give them a new meaning.
Alan used the 5 Card Nancy idea to create his own version using photos uploaded by people at this coference. (133 pics contributed) You can try this activity at www.web.nmc.org/5cardstory/learn2cn.php
When you finish this, your story can be saved on Alan's website and you can write a caption to explain the meaning of your story.
Use a single photo as a starter point for a story and see what different stories you can produce.
Alan was put on the spot to name his favourite webtool. VoiceThread, Flickr, Xtimeline, Vuvox, & Glogster all got a mention.
Answer to final quesiton...Slideshare allows you to share a PowerPoint presentation on the web.
Voicethread - download pictures then add audio
Slide share - "utube for powerpoint" - can inbed it in a webpage http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/50+Ways - A 3 hr workshop Alan ran in Australia. It lists 50 web2 tools which you can use to tell a story.
five card nancy - http://www.7415comics.com/nancy/index.shtm (using nancy comic strips cut into pieces and using these different pieces from different comic strips to make a new comic strip)
Now you can use pictures and use the same concept as 5card nancy
