Learning 2.008 Shanghai Conference

Communication evolved from Lascaux drawings to text and back to images again (but much better resolution! and with Creative Commons!). Come explore concepts of Web 2.0 Storytelling (http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/50+Ways) and engage in some creative activities to get you thinking visually by telling a story in images only.

We will see what we can create as stories from a collection of photos that conference participants submitted ahead of time and examine the processes that go into the decision making... and perhaps play a round of 5 Card Nancy.

Presenter: Alan Levine

The site is an excellent resource for teachers. Alan has told the same story using all 57 tools. Five card Flickr can be used for story starting. User gets five pictures to arrange and create a story.

Comiqs is embeddable into websites. Comic style layout with different pages. Probably unable to print unless you print screen. 741.5 comics - 5 card nancy (re-arrange cards online to create a comic strip story, each time you add a card to the 5 card sequence, you get another 5 to choose from. Working out a story from start to finish in 5 steps. Leads into 5 card learning 2.008. Create a pool of pictures (from Flickr of course) 5 Card Flickr Story.

Okay so this whole presentation so far is just a walk through a list of tools which we can do ourselves actually. This presentation needs to be a strand in itself in order to let us get hands on actually.
Comic life is not on list. Some comic strip programs limit you to 3 panes. Website has some questionable material on it so beware with classroom.
Wish the presenter would define some terms and tools - What is Flickr? Nice to know before you go.
Game 5 card nancy - a comic form narrative tool activity – from McCloud. Get copies of cartoons – cut up panels, deal 5 cards, build a story from random deal.
Five Card Flicker is how you can make a 5 card Nancy game from your own photos – or I suppose your own comic cards? Three ways for language learning - give cartoons with filled bubbles – they need to try to sequence, give cartoons with blank bubbles so they sequence randomly and make the dialogue, give a forced set for them to sequence without a random deal, do only photos and have them narrate. Good to develop Ab Initio or IB narration skill. Worth playing with .
So five card flickr can be stored on Levine’s website.
Slide tools are almost all the same – prefers content from FLICKR – likes Xtimeline
This is a rapid tour of tech tools – very rapid and superficial. I was expecting more hands on and more in depth. This topic deserves to be treated as one whole strand with 3 sessions. Presenter has more knowledge than session permits to be exploited. Deserves a huge unconference session.
Recommendations on sites is very interesting.
Free sites, must work, must be able to link or embed - high utility.
Very worthwhile intro tour but would like some hands on.

Software suggested for sharing and expertise
1. Voicethread great for podcasting and digital storytelling
2.slideshare are highly recommended for uploading ms powerpoint slides. Can now connect mp3 (audio) to ppt slides
What else will allow publishing on the web? See http://www.cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/storytools a wiki page on 50 web 2.0 tools Great site, so make sure you check it out.
Procedures for storytelling
-Try a prompt and work on 5 ideas set up as bullet points to create a story
-Find media list (images) for story and ensure any images have creatvie commons
-Ala n has listed 50 tools - eg mixer tools, he likes a timeline tool - some can be worked in with flickr
- What is the best one? People often ask but he has no answer
Listed all these tools, but he needed to be able to use them, so decided to create the same story 57 times using all these tools. His story was about his stray dog. Build story on website and most tools allows embedding into own webpages with the code that is attached to the tools.
-used comiq maker, uploaded photos to flickr, picked up captions and added it to the comiq desktop application
Five card Nancy
Enjoyed a workshop on telling stories through five card Nancy. (understanding stories through comics, communication between frames of comics)
As a group we
Chose nancy and the giraffe, nancy doing a handflip, nancy on the phoneplus two others.
Once choose , cannot change the frames.
Applications in classroom
How do you put things that don’t belong together to make some meaning
Then could get students to write out the story to build it out in paragraphs
Choose one or two, and then get students to finish the story in groups.

What about doing that with pictures? So Allan called them five card flickr
Search for 5card learning
Choice 1 = 5 card story Picture of wiki bus in Hawaii, lecture pad, lion, guy with eyes closed, people riding the bus tagged with 5card flickr for purpose of conference.
He wanted a picture of single person, person interacting, animal, some form of transportation, a writing object as these might pull out a story. So, we chose the following for Allan from his collection
Second choice =Little boy, tattoo, 2 people doing a happy signal, person in India sitting next to snake and woman with helmut.
Elephant, fireturck, guy relaxed, coffee cup
4th choice
We chose lion, then woman in helmut, elephant,
Store it and listed on his website and can give a caption as to what you want the story to be about. So they are saved on his website. From Banjo to Beer: A travel Tale guy playing banjo, beach, the happy guy Gives credit links to where images came from.
A single story can often be good as a prompt. Write captions what might be happening here. Could be beginning of story, or end of story, Give people names, relationship (punk guy with old lady) What if Charlie loves classical music and Evelyn’s into punk.
Allan Levine likes VT cos of link to audio, likes those that work with content from flickr It uses drawing tools, video and text
Likes timeline tools xline Can enter into spreadsheet and grab from there.
Voovox Toolboxcollage creates long strip that you can slide back and forth, til
Glogster create multi media posters, sound files and can click and play no 28
