Learning 2.008 Conference

Digiteen and Digiteacher - is your school ready to embrace action for digital citizenship?

Using the recent Digiteen global collaborative project (see http://digiteen.wikispaces.com) as a catalyst this session explores what it means to be a digital citizen and how your school community can become actively engaged in promoting best practice use of online learning. Forget the fear factor, embrace safe practices and informed pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning online with educational networking and collaborative websites.

Hello everyone

Just to let you know all resources for this presentation can be found on my PB Wiki Links and also on my digital portfolio wiki.

This session aims to share some experiences as an international educator having embarked on a global project aimed at raising awareness of what it means to be a digital citizen and how from this understanding an action can form that benefits other members of the immediate community.
I am looking forward to hearing your stories about digital citizenship in your schools.

Anne: How many countries are represented in the room with Julie Lindsay
Anne: So, Mike, Lenva and Da where are you from - what ? I am from Australia
mike: I'm from the US
mike: teaching in Xiamen at present
Anne: Hi Mike, I guess Xiamen is in China
Anne: Has anyone else been involved in global projects? If so, what?
Anne: One of our girls used a word which was reasonable acceptable in Australia but highly offensive in Canada in a comment as a response to the Canadian student's blog
mike: Yeah, about halfway between here and hong kong
mike: these issues seem to be more about what being a good digital citizen is, rather than digital citizenship. Citizenship to me is as much about rights as responsibilities. What rights does digital citizenship imply?
Anne: The rights may be discussed soon
Matt from x.x.x.33 joined the chat 53 minutes ago

Julie, a technical question:
In your presentation your screen shots were on a slight angel...how did you do that?

HI, re your technical question, in PPT 2007 (MS Office) there are many effects available that will do this for you.

Here are my notes from Julie's session - a topic which is of great interest to me.
Session with Julie Lindsay using http://classic.chatzy.com/231054869290
Used chatzy as the back channel for chat during Julie’s session to foster whole idea of a back channel as a sub level conversation.

What is a 21st century citizen cf a citizen of a country. Online presence leaving digital footprints. There are few online sites mentioning digital citizenship.
Google does not bring anything up for digital citizenship
Discussion from group as to what is digital citizenship.
• Respond in appropriate way
• Appropriate behavior when connecting via a digital medium.
• Detachment of not seeing the emotions and body language of the other person
• Sarcasm does not transfer well
• Individual sense of humours do not transfer well
Digital citizenship book defines it as the norms of behavior with regard to technology use.
Using another person’s login/id and posting an inappropriate response Is this acceptable?
A student in Qatar working well on project walked away and then posted inappropriate material and phone number.
Are disguised expletives acceptable?
Students quite often report this.
How do you define an appropriate image or icon for a personal profile?
• Cultural sensitivity
• Issues of privacy and safety online
(One boy put up 2 bottles of beer as his avatar)
Kids have to learn that when they post something, the speed at which it goes. A parent passed away, so friends put a comment on the daughter’s myspace page but daughter was overseas and did not even know about it yet. Social graces when is it appropriate time to do things
Rights of digital citizenship, not just responsibility:-
• Respect of opinions and ideas
• Rights to privacy
• Copyright and digital ownership
Digi Teen project
• Joining young people together to take positive steps toward good digital citizenship.
• Goes beyond netiquette… more than just a teaching tool – a way to prepare for a digital world
• Digital access, communication and literacy
• Student environment and behavior
• Security and safety etiquette and digital rights and responsibilities
3. Student life outside classroom
• Digital law
• Digital commerce
• Digital health and wellness
Students understand human, cultural and societal issues related to technology and practice digital citizenship
Look at communication, collaboration, content, action are the 4 stages
Communication:- lets start looking at communicating
Collaboration = research, pbs online videos and watch, comment, reflect on it, develop a wiki page with resources to share.
Content Put content up on ning at http://digiteen.ning.com Building presentations, discussion areas on wiki http://digiteen.wikispaces.com
Then action : bring it back to school Qatar did presentations to grade 4 and 9s Classes were quite enthralled by all the topics
Outcomes
• Leadership in bringing the concepts to students
• Students teaching students
Could use digital tools for digital storytelling. One student set up a blog to try and share all the stories
Be a digiteacher
• Need to experience it yourself and connect via a ning so can understand how it works, appropriate behavior, when do you blog, start a forum, a group When do you use discussion feature on a wiki?
• Monitor and be engaged – needs to be monitored so educational validity
• Avoid the ‘fear factor’ Make a difference
Sharing of ideas with the other countries students have similar experiences and cultural identities with similarities rather than differences. The collaborative creation of content was important.
What digital citizenship ACTION ideas do you have?
Developed a code of conduct by teachers
Looking at the actions of the three schools. Vicki’s actions was similar to ours but the Vienna school, made buttons, sent out surveys.
Networking organizations
Advocates for digital citizenship
http://digitalcitizenship.ning.com
http://flatclassrooms.ning.com
Delicious/julielindsaydigitalcitizenship
Students often feel detached when online but behavior should be same as for offline.
Conference in Qatar in January to bring students together from around the world and show students how a flat classroom operates.
