Learning 2.008 Shanghai Conference

An open session to discussion global collaborations with Kim Cofino and Julie Lindsay

A huge thanks to Jabiz for taking notes:

Started by sharing ideas:

Interests:
Chemistry (transition to university)

Talk about Nings and their benefits - good place to get started, explore other projects, make connections to other interested and like-minded educators, get project ideas, post your own project ideas to connect with other classes
Good place to meet with people of similar interests
Great Nings to join:
Classroom 2.0
Ning In Education
Flatclassrooms
Intrepid Classroom
Global Education Collaborative
iEarn

Define project goals.
What are the assessments?
Find the tool that fits your needs.

Good examples of Ning:

Julie: All six graders on a Ning as a tool to create community. Eliminates email, share what is going on in school, bypassing server.

How do you monitor behavior?

Don’t filter, but monitor. There are problems, but these ate teachable moments.

Good Collaborating Projects:

see list of resources here: http://connectingacrosscontinents.wikispaces.com/resources

How do you get teachers involved?

Embed the collaboration and technology into the curriculum
Help build admin of changing scope of learning
Things will always be changing and you’re never really done.
Don’t talk about tools. Talk about what teachers want to do.

Making people change?

Success stories:

Bring parents on board.
Great planning is key
See session five by Kim Cofino for more details on a successful project.

Please add your interest in global collaborations as a comment to this forum so that we can continue our conversations beyond the conference :)

Loved it.
We're doing a science unit and we want to bring real scientists into the classroom (using Skype.) Where can we find them?
