Joseph H. Kerr, Snow Lake, Manitoba Canada
Position:
Probably just like you, I live in a classroom. A grade seven and eight classroom to be exact. I think learning spaces and teachers are on the forefront of globalisation. We see it all first. I also believe in facing this challenge head on with new ideas and new tools. No use running and hiding.

I've spoken at conferences in many places, and my classroom has been featured in newspapers, magazines and journal articles. I've also been fortunate enough to win the Prime Minister's Award; the highest award a teacher can win in Canada.

Leaving Shanghai

Only a few hours left until I begin the long haul out of Shanghai back to North America. This has been an excellent trip for so many reasons. I have had gracious, generous hosts and have had the opportunity to meet fascinating people as individuals, hearing some of their stories. I still need some time to think about the conference itself, that will come soon. But as I'm getting ready to leave this place, I wonder about some of the things I've seen here.

Shanghai is a city on the move. It is th… Continue

Welcome to Asia

I made it. After a few long days and several long flights, I made it to Shanghai. A great few hours walking around the city last night with Jeff Utecht and later with Alan Levine. This morning I'm wondering about international education, global collaboration and problem solving. I was lucky enough for the first two years of my teaching career to work in Abu Dhabi. An amazing place and the experience truly changed my life; helping me to understand much more about cultural differences and the impo… Continue

Tick Tock

And so it begins again....

Twenty years ago this week I threw up the blind in my residence room and watched more people walk across the grassy quad, getting off of the buses at the University of Manitoba for their first day of school than lived in my hometown.

I was scared and excited at the same time.

Fifteen years ago this week I began my first teaching job and welcomed my first class of 25 grade three students at the Abu Dhabi International School where my wife and I moved three months aft… Continue

A New Space

Not having started another blog since I began writing Remote Access a few years ago, it's interesting writing here. It's like a chance to reinvent yourself. I think that is why a lot of people like writing online. You can be anyone. If you wanted to, you could write anonomously and tell complete lies to the world. This is an important lesson for kids to learn. They have complete control over their digital footprint online and really can use it anyway they please. We hope they will use it honestl… Continue

Making Plans in Summer Time

The end of July approaches and I wonder about the beginning of the new school year. While this is still a month away for me, it seems that as soon as the calendar moves towards August, my brain wants to head back to school. I begin wondering about the plans I had started in June for the next school year. Will they work? Will the changes I envisioned happen? Will I be able to do what I thought I might? What has changed over the summer that I need to be aware of?

I've spent the last three days bu… Continue

Anne; Thanks for the kind words and I 'm glad that you enjoyed the sessions. I use a spreadsheet for comments just because it makes it easier to organize. The columns I make the kids use are: date, URL (where comment is left) and the comment itself. And yes, they just cut and paste it into the sheet itself. One thing I am also going to experiment this year with is having the kids keep a google map of places they make contact with around the world. So for example they might use one colour of pin for comments they receive from different places and another colour for places they have left comments for. I then plan on bringing all of these maps together into one place so we can track, as a class all of these connections. It should work but I've never tried it before. Something new this year!

Thank you for your unconference session where you shared your blogs, igoogle and class use of web2.0 tools. I really enjoyed it and learnt lots.
My students are also bloggers and I really want to try and track comments that they make as they actively seek out fellow bloggers around the world. This is one element that I have no real control over and so was really interested in your idea of using google sheet.
However, it intrigued me that you used a spreadsheet for this and not a word doc. Why? what are the actual processes. Do students copy and paste comment into a cell, or the link to the student post that they commented on? What type of column headings do you set up? Have you ever used tags in comments or other methods of tracking them? Thanks for being so sharing and presenting at this conference.

I really enjoyed Click. You have a great grasp of technology and some great analogies. Thanks for coming out to Shanghai!

Clarence, thanks for getting the conference off to such a good start. When you began your TED Talk, none of us knew what to expect of this format here at Learning 2.008. Within a minute or two, I could see everyone around me loosening up, smiling, nodding. You do such a good job of making really big ideas accessible, of touching on a lot of big ideas and helping us see why they are important and the connections between them -- and us.

Thanks for traveling all this way, battling jet lag and bureaucracies to be here. We are hugely delighted to have you here.

Looking forward to meeting you Clarence. I watched you and Darren present at a conference in the States (I think it was the states?) via ustream and you were so entertaining. One of the best ustreams I've seen.
