The advantage of Ning is that the teacher can create an online learning community. It allows sharing of resources, aggregating of websites or other digital sources, commenting and feedback on ideas and writing.

Students can post to blogs. They can subscribe to their friends' blogs. They can reply and comment on other students' blog posts.

Students can integrate photos (flickr) and video (youtube) and share those resources.

so how do we prove or assess what IT skills students have, which benchmarks they have met?

Let's decide what we think students should know and be able to do. That's where we are right now. Then we approach teachers, team leaders and dept heads and ask them to look at the benchmarks, the skills and choose those that they think their students, their math students, their fifth graders, need to know and be able to do.
