TED Talk - David Jakes

Early technologies in his school: ditto machine, and opaque projector.
One day, these things just disappeared. He wondered where they went - they became smart cars in Brussels.

His students began to have online access and what they were using was RateMyTeacher.com
Very intimidating, unless you post positive things about yourself. :D

Hot or Not was a really problematic site. You post a photo of yourself and people vote whether or not you are hot. He posted his photo. Had mom and sister vote.

TED Talks - Alan Levine: Flickr, Microniches, and Optimism

Alan isn't a classroom teacher. He is starting with a (self-called) dumb statement. He is from Strawberry, Arizona, USA. Oldest school in AZ is in his town. Here is the dumb statement:

The internet is really big.

He relates it to staring into the Grand Canyon.

Alan has no formal degrees in education. He studied a big of geology.

(distracted while I tell Patrick how to get onto the wifi here.)

How Big is the Internet?

Alan uses lots of Flickr. Posted photo on his… Continue

TED Talks - Brian Crosby

Las Vegas, USA.

The students he teaches may not be like the students you teach. He has 12 students in his 6th grade class that he also had as 4th graders. He loops with his students. No child left behind forced him to not have a multi-age classroom.

Over 80% of his students speak English as a second language. Over 80% qualify for free lunch. Many of them don't have a solid language. They have small vocabularies. Very little schema in life. So Brian is always on the lookout for projects that gi… Continue

Susan: I was wondering if you had a chance to post the video on Best Practice? Is it online somewhere. Thanks, David

Susan great question! My students are incredible. When we get a new student we just meld them into a group and if they don't speak English the group makes sure that someone is sitting with them that is bilingual that explain what we do, what's going on. I've had them do this even when there is a sub in the room. We talked about it in 4th grade, what it's like to be new etc. and since then it doesn't take much reminding from me, in fact they seem to revel in being responsible this way. The short version is that you have to take the time to build that culture in your classroom! Hope that helps.
